Most people choose a table they like and hope it fits. Do it the other way round. It takes five minutes and a tape measure.
- Measure the length and width of your dining space.
- Take away 180 cm from each. That is 90 cm of walking space on each side.
- What is left is the biggest table you can fit.
Example: a dining area of 400 x 320 cm leaves room for a table up to 220 x 140 cm. That fits a 6 seater (180 cm) comfortably.
One more rule for seating. Each person needs about 60 cm of table edge. So a 180 cm table seats 6, and a 240 cm table seats 8.

Round, Rectangular or Oval Dining Table: Which Shape Is Best?
One question decides it: does anyone have to walk behind the chairs?
If yes, choose round or oval. They have no corners to hit, and they need less floor space for the same number of seats. A 120-150 cm round table seats 4 to 6.
If the table sits against a wall or runs down a long room, choose rectangular. It is the best shape for 6 or more people.
If you only host a few times a year, look at an extendable table. It stays small most of the year and opens up for guests.
Best Dining Table Material: Wood, Marble, Veneer or Sintered Stone
Skip the long spec lists. Ask how your table will be used.
- Kids and daily meals: choose veneer, laminate or a sintered stone top. They handle spills and daily wipe-downs well.
- Hosting and looks: marble gives the best look, and every slab is different. Lemon, wine and oil can mark it, so use placemats and wipe spills quickly.
- A table for 10 years or more: solid wood. It is heavy and costs more, but it can be sanded and refinished.
- A table near a sunny window or balcony door: keep real wood out of direct afternoon sun. Strong sun can fade a finish over time.

3 Mistakes to Avoid When Buying a Dining Table
1. Buying the table before measuring the lift and door.
Tabletops are long and flat. If your lift is small, tell us before you order.
2. Forgetting chair height.
Standard tables are 72-76 cm high. Chairs with a seat of 43-48 cm sit comfortably under them. Very chunky chairs or armchairs may not slide under a table with a thick frame.
3. Choosing the biggest table that “fits”.
If you can only just walk around it, it is too big. Leave the 90 cm.
